Impress your reader: 5 ways to write a conclusion for a research paper

When you are writing a paper one of the important components without which your paper cannot survive is the conclusion.

Writing a conclusion for a research paper is quite tricky for many students. But below are five ways you can impress your reader by writing your conclusion for your research paper:

  1. Consider the length of the conclusion first and foremost. Make sure that the overall length of your conclusion corresponds properly with the length of your paper. That means that if you are writing a long twenty page research paper your conclusion will be more than three sentences. It should be long enough to make up ten percent of your total paper. So for a twenty page paper your conclusion should take up two pages. If you are writing a five page paper then your conclusion should take up one half of one page. You should have an average of one paragraph for the conclusion. If you are writing an expansive fifty page paper then your conclusion may be an entire chapter in and of itself but for most students a single paragraph is sufficient for the conclusion.
  2. Consider the content. Your conclusion needs to contain roughly the same things you wrote in your introduction. The conclusion needs to start off with a sentence that rephrases or repeats your thesis statement. It should then include one sentence that surmises each of the body paragraphs in your essay. So if you have a five paragraph essay with three body paragraphs then your concluding paragraph will need to have three sentences in it each or which surmise the three body paragraphs.
  3. End your conclusion with a thought provoking question or fact. End it with an explanation as to why your paper matters and how it relates to the bigger picture. Talk about what implications it has or remind the reader why your results matter.
  4. Avoid introducing any new material at this juncture. Many students have a single idea or argument for which they lacked sufficient evidence but they so desperately want to include it in the essay somewhere that they stuff it into the conclusion. Do not do this. This will only serve to confuse the reader and reflect poorly on your paper.
  5. Avoid getting too dramatic at the end. You want to make sure your conclusion retains the tone of the rest of your essay.

Writing a term paper

Any ideas or concepts you use while writing should be written clearly. This means try to continue your idea and provide thorough details to ensure readers don’t get lost in the text. Good sentence and paragraph structure will be helpful.

Ensure references are mentioned correctly and review citation and bibliography details. There are written samples available for each formatting style to help you compare how to reference and cite your own sources.

Know where you can get good writing examples. Consider your school library, school website, and handbooks on term paper writing and formatting. You may get ideas on how to develop your topic, thesis, and write other parts of your term paper.

A strong conclusion is important and helps bring the whole assignment together. Your main points should be mentioned briefly and consider providing clarity to a main point mentioned previously with an example. Reinstate thesis statement.
