How To Ace Your Research Paper: A 10-Step Guide

If you are writing a research paper, there are ten steps you can take to ensure it is well written and earns you an A:

  1. Make a schedule. You need to set aside enough time to complete your paper so make sure that you know how long it is supposed to be and set aside enough time. A solid 10-20 page research paper should take about one month.
  2. Create a solid thesis statement.
  3. Take copious notes as you research your topic.
  4. Craft your outline.
  5. Write your rough draft. This should be done as freely as you can, with the outline followed closely. Use all of your notes but make sure the paper itself does not have more than 10% quotes. If you have too many quotes it will look as though you are trying to fill the paper and don’t have enough to say.
  6. Revise the rough draft only after you have done it all. Make sure you check for accuracy in all of your data. Remember that each paragraph should be about one key item and should be roughly the same size. If you find that one paragraph is only two or three short sentences then add too it or rework it so that it fits in with a paragraph above or below. Rework the draft until you feel that you have made the strongest argument possible.
  7. Review the final draft for coherence. Reword your sentences to ensure your punctuation and grammar is correct. Check the work with a dictionary and spell check, but then print the pages and read them out loud to double check.
  8. Make sure your footnotes and your bibliography match your requirements. You should find a manual for the type of format you are required to use and match each source and citation you have to the manual exactly. If you are stuck, ask your teacher for advice.
  9. Take a day off after you have finished all of these components. Your brain will need a break from the content and by giving yourself some time apart from the essay, you will be better suited to return to work and to review your quotes and citations for accuracy and to find errors you might have otherwise missed.
  10. Finally, give yourself a pat on the back for a job well done. Back up your work and submit your final paper.

Writing a term paper

Any ideas or concepts you use while writing should be written clearly. This means try to continue your idea and provide thorough details to ensure readers don’t get lost in the text. Good sentence and paragraph structure will be helpful.

Ensure references are mentioned correctly and review citation and bibliography details. There are written samples available for each formatting style to help you compare how to reference and cite your own sources.

Know where you can get good writing examples. Consider your school library, school website, and handbooks on term paper writing and formatting. You may get ideas on how to develop your topic, thesis, and write other parts of your term paper.

A strong conclusion is important and helps bring the whole assignment together. Your main points should be mentioned briefly and consider providing clarity to a main point mentioned previously with an example. Reinstate thesis statement.
